Chalazion Treatment

What is Chalazion?

In basic terms, Chalazion is a small bump above or below the eylid that is caused by blocked oil glands. These ‘Meibomian‘ glands produce and secrete fluids and oils which lubricate your eyelids and eyes. When they are obstructed or blocked, they slowly form these bumps called Chalazia’s.

They naturally disappear in time, however medicine and chalazion treatment may shorten the time needed to cure it completely. If your Chalazion does not correct itself within a few months, it might be cancer blocking the duct. In this instance, immediate medical assistance is needed. The Chalazia is often red, swollen and sore, and generally uncomfortable and unsightly. Occasionally, itching is a symptom of chalazion.

Chalazion Treatment

Typical of lumps and inflamed infections and blockages, picking and scratching will only aggrrivate and prolong healing.Apart from time, a few remedies can be utilized in order to speed up the process or healing or nullify the negative symptoms associated with chalazion:

Massaging slow circular motions with your finger (make sure your finger is clean) can aid in reducing swelling.

Antibiotics prescribed by an eye specialist can sometimes be relevant, but often have no use in treating chalazia’s.

Chalazion Warm Compresses:

A heat pack, or hot cloth pressed against the eyelid frequently can help, several times a day for up to a few minutes at a time.

Chalazion Surgery

If all other avenues of treatment have been exhausted, surgery may be necessary to treat chalazia’s which are persistent or keep growing. As the eyes are a delicate feature of the body and face, surgery also carries inherit risks of damage to the area.
