Your eyes are irreplaceable and you should never spoil your eyesight. Many people have a lot of eye diseases or simply a bad eyesight and they are fully deprived of a normal life when having a bad eyesight you can not drive a car without glasses or contact lenses, you can not watch a movie in the cinema - you just do not completely see the actors and the action as well. We can drive hundreds of similar examples here but the one thing is clear: you do need prescription eyeglasses in order to see well and enjoy the life to the full.

Contact lenses is a nice replacement for glasses but anyway every medal has two sides: lenses are to be handled with special care and unfortunately they can not be used absolutely by anyone whose eyesight is bad due to health restrictions. But the great issue about lenses is that you can buy sunglasses and fully protect your eyes from the direct sun rays.

What is Xanthelasma ?

If you have a small, glossy, yellow oval lump on your upper eyelid, it is most likely a growth and clumping of cholesterol under the skin called Xanthelasma.

To compare your lesions to confirm whether they are in fact lesions of xanthelasma, see the images at the base of this page. More specifically, an increase or inability to properly digest lipids increases the chance of the lumps forming.

Although it isn’t dangerous or discomforting in any sort (other than it’s appearance), there are surgical and topical means of removing it. The disorder has a much higher chance of affecting those of Middle-eastern and Asian descent.

What is Glaucoma?

When the eye’s natural draining systems and structures become interrupted or malformed from intraocular pressure, the result is Glaucoma.

Glaucoma progressively damages the nerves in your eyes which will consistently diminishes your vision until blindness. It forms due to a disruption in the natural and acceptable levels of aqueous.

Generally, it is very difficult to detect early on and is only diagnosed in its advanced stages when the majority of the damage has been done. Many factors such as steroid use, diabetes, hereditary and race increase the chance of developing Glaucoma, for instance African-american’s are up to 3 times more prone to develop the disorder.

More specifically, viral and bacterial infections are known as acute dacryoadenitis, while chronic dacryoadenitis refers to non-infectious causes.

There are many possible causes and catalysts for dacryoadenitis, some more common in children and the elderly. These include:

Acute Dacryoadenitis Causes/Influences

Staphylococcus (a bacteria that thrives in dry conditions and aging/old food)

Gonococcus/Gonohorrea (sexual transmitted disease)

Herpes zoster

Mononucleosis

Epstein-Barr Virus (a common family branch of the herpes simplex virus strain)

Mumps (an epedimic rash and or swelling)

Coxsackievirus A

Although Staphylococcus is the most probable cause, other bacteria includes:

Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Cytomegalovirus

Treponema pallidum

Chlamydia trachomatis

Mycobacterium tuberculosis/leprae

What is Hordeolum?

Simply put, Hordeolum (which is more commonly referred as a ’stye’) is a blockage of the sebaceous glands at the base of the eyelash. The hair follicles cannot form and function properly thus leading to a painful, inflammed infection in the gland that may cause further irritation of the eye from scabbing and flaking remenants. The infection is a result of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria strain, a common catalyst in eyelid infections.

It is commonly confused with Chalazion, which occurs around the eyelids instead and is generally painless. In time the infection may cure itself, but other techniques and methods of treatment are recommended for faster, safer Stye removal instead.

These ‘Meibomian‘ glands produce and secrete fluids and oils which lubricate your eyelids and eyes. When they are obstructed or blocked, they slowly form these bumps called Chalazia’s.

They naturally disappear in time, however medicine and chalazion treatment may shorten the time needed to cure it completely. If your Chalazion does not correct itself within a few months, it might be cancer blocking the duct. In this instance, immediate medical assistance is needed. The Chalazia is often red, swollen and sore, and generally uncomfortable and unsightly. Occasionally, itching is a symptom of chalazion.

What is Conjunctivitis?

Have you been to a public function recently, or with relatives, and your eyes are progressively becoming grittier, sensitive redder or beginning to pus? It’s likely to be conjunctivitis, as it is generally highly contagious. It is more frequently called ‘pink eye’. It is one of the most common eye infections in the world, and is relatively easily treatable and painless (it can however be, highly uncomfortable and irritable).

Apart from being caught from another person infected, common catalysts include dirt, smoke and chemicals found in cleaners and pools. However, it can also be brought on by allergies. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. In more specific terms, conjunctivitis is an irritation and infection of the conjunctivita, the outer layer of eye and protecting layer on the eyelids. Eye cultures taken by a doctor or examination through a slit lamp microscope are used to diagnose conjunctivitis.
